Yammer: Enterprise MicroBlogging

Yammer

Earlier today, I was reading an email  highlighting the results from a global employee feedback survey that my company did and in the process of this reading, I came back across one word that caught my attention after a long time. Yammer!

A funny sounding word that, makes you pause for second and wonder. . . . . What The?

The bigger question that I then asked myself, what does Yammer do?

Enterprise MicroBlogging, is what it is all about. Many work places, due to requirements of maintaining privacy of information and also in an attempt to keep a check on productive time, it has become quite common for internal IT teams to block access to social blogging sites. This means, a lot of people who are frequent users of various social networking sites are restricted to their online activities. This is where Yammer comes into place. A free service that can be taken up in the internal network of the company at a cost of $1 per user per month, Yammer offers a mini social network that is secure for usage. The interface is mix and match of options between Orkut, Twitter and Facebook. The main interface is Twitter like, managing subscriptions to groups follows Orkuts interface and while posting within a group, something similar to facebook.

Simply put, it is an ease of access tool that lets you take your mind off work for a few minutes and still indulge in your blogging habit.

Two few interesting facts about Yammer:

Winner of TechCrunch50 in 2008. Yammer was one among several finalists that the jury chose

Developed and launched by David O. Sacks, the same guy who produced the movie THANK YOU FOR SMOKING.
